Well, it's a nice story, no doubt...but what I often thought is “confused”.
On the other side the plot is definitely good, I enjoyed the characters, especially George who is fantastic in his being so imperfect, I think that his flaws and his problems are the best part of the romance.
George Upperton is a scoundrel, a womaniser and he is in trouble with debts; the icing on the cake is served when his mistress tells him she is pregnant.
Isabel Mears is a beautiful, sweet and discreet woman who, years ago, made the worst mistake of her life which changed completely her existence.
Now, with a secret she tries to hide, she lives with her son Jack in a small Channel side village. She has worked hard to protect her past and to create a new life with all the compromises it has required.
Isabel and George meet when he saves Jack form drowning and after that almost dramatic first encounter their lives change completely: the attraction between them is undeniable from the beginning and, knowing each other, Isabel understands that George is not the shallow man he appears to be...
Maybe the thing is the novel didn't catch me that much; the characters, generally speaking, apart from a sympathy, didn't charm me, they are fine but not outstanding. The story, as I said before, is pretty good and there are other aspects actually interesting, see George and his behaviour or Jack, but the whole novel sometimes is a bit superficial. I really liked Henrietta (George's sister).
Anyway I'll read the next book, maybe I'll enjoy it more, there are good potentials.
??? series: 1. A most scandalous proposal (Benedict, Sophia)
2. A most devilish rogue (George, Isabel)
